What We Do

Feed a Mouth Initiative

In the year 2020, a visit to the Kaverinagar slum and 10 surrounding villages by our Salesian sisters revealed a heartbreaking reality: many elderly residents were struggling to access basic necessities, including food, and were often left to face the day with empty stomachs. Moved by their plight, we decided to take action and provide meals to these senior citizens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. As we served them, we saw the joy and gratitude in their eyes, and our hearts were filled with compassion, realizing that this was more than just a meal - it was a reminder that they were not alone, that someone cared. We adopted the Feed a Mouth program as one of our core initiatives, believing that every individual deserves dignity and respect, regardless of their age or circumstances, and by providing meals to those who need them most, we aim to bring hope and comfort to their lives, and we invite others to join us in making a difference in the lives of these precious individuals.

Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

FIDES has around 150 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) that are functioning effectively, with the primary goal of empowering women to become financially stable and independent. These SHGs were established to inculcate saving habits among women, providing them with micro credits to start small businesses and become entrepreneurs. The groups meet regularly, and during these meetings, the women are required to contribute a certain amount of money as savings, which helps them to develop a habit of saving and managing their finances. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting financial inclusion and independence among women, enabling them to take control of their economic lives and improve their overall well-being.

Neighborhood Children's Parliament

The Neighborhood Childre'sParliament (NCP) is a program designed for children from the same locality to come together and discuss problems affecting their community. The program brings together 10-15 children who meet once a week to address issues such as water scarcity, waste disposal, and other common problems. There is a parliament setup, with their own president, speaker, and ministers, and make decisions to improve their locality. The goal is to empower children to take ownership of their community's issues and develop leadership skills, civic awareness, and social responsibility among its young participants.

Tuition Centers For The Migrant Children

FIDES has established six tuition centers to support the School Going children of construction workers. These centers provide a safe and supportive environment for children to complete their homework and receive additional academic support after school. Each centre has a dedicated teacher who provides one-to-one and half hours of instruction daily, helping children with their schoolwork and teaching them some new skills. The goal of these tuition centers is to ensure that the children of construction workers have access to the academic support they need to succeed in school, despite their parent’s busy work schedules.

De-Addiction Center

FIDES, committed to uplifting the marginalized, has been addressing substance abuse through its De-Addiction Programme, offering care and rehabilitation to individuals struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Since its re-launch in October 2021, FIDES has supported over 154 patients from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

Initially conducted in partnership with a hospital, the programme faced space constraints, prompting the inauguration of FIDES’s own De-Addiction Centre on November 30, 2022.

Tailoring

Since 1993, the tailoring course has been one of FIDES’s flagship programs. Over its three-month duration, the course combines both formal and informal training to equip women with practical skills, confidence, and pathways to independence. Formally, participants learn the technical aspects of tailoring — pattern drafting, machine work, garment cutting and stitching, finishing touches, and quality control. Informally, they receive mentoring in soft skills like time-management, customer service, basic business know-how, and self-esteem building.By bringing together these two components, FIDES ensures that women not only acquire the craft, but also the mindset and tools needed to apply it.
