On 24/10/2024 a social action program was organized under the supervision of Sister Sumi Joseph, FIDES, with trainees from St. Joseph’s University focusing on the male migrant workers in the Safal Labour Colony, Avalahalli. The program addressed the issue of substance abuse, specifically Gutka, chewing tobacco, alcohol, and psychoactive substances. The objective was to raise awareness and educate participants on the impact of substance abuse.

The session started with an assessment of the male workers in the area to understand the prevalence of substance use and to encourage them to participate in the awareness session. A lecture session followed, culminating in a vote of thanks. The program aimed to foster healthier lifestyle choices and prevent the harmful impacts of substance abuse.

Problems/Needs Identified
1. High Substance Abuse Rate: There is a significant presence of harmful substances such as Gutka, chewing tobacco, alcohol, and psychoactive drugs among the migrant workers.
2. Lack of Awareness: Workers are largely unaware of the long-term health impacts of substance use, and many have normalized the habit due to peer pressure.
3.Limited Access to Healthcare and Support: The lack of access to healthcare and support services makes it difficult for individuals to seek help in overcoming their dependency.

Objectives of the Program
1. Raise Awareness: To educate male migrant workers about the health risks of substance abuse, specifically Gutka, tobacco, alcohol, and psychoactive substances.
2. Promote Healthy Alternatives: Equip participants with the knowledge to make healthier lifestyle choices.

The session started with an initial survey of male workers to assess the prevalence and severity of substance abuse. Workers were encouraged to participate in the program, which began with a lecture discussing the harmful effects of Gutka, tobacco, and alcohol on their physical and mental well-being.

In conclusion, the substance abuse awareness program at Safal Labour Colony was a successful session and it has raised awareness about the dangers of Gutka, tobacco, alcohol, and psychoactive substances, empowering participants to make healthier choices and support each other in overcoming these challenges and methods to overcome these challenges.
